Frequently Asked Questions
Dreads
What are synthetic dreads?
Synth dreads are a 'fake' version of dreadlocks, made from a fibre called 'kanekalon' or jumbo braid, they are backcombed and sealed to represent the look of dreads, they are then braided into the hair and act as a temporary form of hair extension.
What are roving dreads?
Roving dreads are made from natural wool tops and hand rolled to form a firm dreadlock shape. They are light and braided into the hair and form another temporary form of hair extension.
Will they damage my hair?
Hair sheds naturally everyday and it may seem when dreads are removed that you are loosing alot of hair but this is natural as it is just a build up of the normal hair that is braided around the dread that you would normally shed daily.
How long do they last?
Depending on whether you use dread falls, or a dread kit you can leave them in for as little as a night out or a maximum of up to 12 weeks at most. Any more than 12 weeks may cause your natural hair to start to matt as it grows. Dread falls are a less permanent way of changing your hair and can stay in for an hour or a day, however long you would like. Dread falls are just tied around a bun of your natural hair.
How are they removed?
All you have to do is snip the rubber band and unbraid your hair from around the dread, then comb out gently.
Can I wash my hair with them in?
Yes. I reccomend diluting some shampoo (you can purchase shampoo's specifically for braids and dreads) with water and pouring it in sections over your scalp. Massage scalp and then again in sections, thoroughly rinse hair with warm water. Make sure there is no residue left as this increase an itchy scalp. Try to avoid getting your dreads wet as they get heavy when wet and put strain upon your hair.
What is the difference between single and double ended?
Double ended dreads are one long length folded into two and braided into the hair down one side of the dread whilst the other hangs loose.
Single ended dreads are a single dread with a loop at the top which is used to pull hair through and then the natural hair is braided.
How long does my hair have to be?
Hair should be a minimum of 3'' to braid dread extentions into, any shorter and the dreads would likely slip out or not grip enough in the first place.
For falls you need to be able to make a bun or short pony tail in your hair that can take the weight of the falls.
